چکیده

Passivemicrowave radiometer data over the ocean have beenwidely used, but data near coastlines or over lakes often cannot be used because of the large footprint with mixed signals from both land and water. For example, current standard Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) products, including wind, water vapor, and precipitation, are typically unavailable within about 100km of any coastline. This paper presents methods of correcting land-contaminated radiometer data in order to extract the coastal information. The land contamination signals are estimated, and then removed, using a representative antenna pattern convolved with a high-resolution land–water mask. This method is demonstrated using SSM/I data over the Great Lakes and validated with simulated data and buoymeasurements. The land contamination is significantly reduced, and thewind speed retrieval is improved. This method is not restricted to SSM/I and wind retrievals alone; it can be applied more generally to microwave radiometer measurements in coastal regions for other retrieval purposes.

Improving passive microwave sea ice concentration algorithms for coastal areas: applications to the Baltic Sea

Sea ice concentration can be retrieved from passive microwave data using the NASA Team algorithm or the Artist Sea Ice (ASI) algorithm, for example. The brightness temperature measurements obtained from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) instrument or the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSR-E) are commonly used for this purpose. Due to the coarse resolution of these instru...

Ground Truth of Passive Microwave Radiative Transfer on Vegetated Land Surfaces

In this paper, we implemented the in-situ observation of surface soil moisture (SSM), vegetation water content (VWC), and microwave brightness temperatures. By analyzing this in-situ observation dataset and the numerical simulation, we investigated the source of the uncertainty of the current algorithms for Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth observation system (AMSR-E) and AMSR2 t...

Preliminary Assessment of the Impact of Lakes on Passive Microwave Snow Retrieval Algorithms in the Arctic

The retrieval of snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow depth (SD) information from passive microwave brightness temperatures is theoretically straightforward: as the depth and/or density of snow increases, so too does the amount of volume scatter of naturally emitted microwave energy. Shorter wavelength energy (i.e. 37 GHz) is more readily scattered than longer wavelength energy (i.e. 19 GHz), s...

Passive Microwave Remote Sensing of Tropical Cyclones

Passive microwave radiometers have a strong heritage of instruments: the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), the Tropical Rainfall Mapping Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI), the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer–Earth Observing (AMSR-E) and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMI/S). These instruments measure vertically and horizontally polarized brightness temperatures ...

The sensitivity of land emissivity estimates from AMSR-E at C and X bands to surface properties

Microwave observations at low frequencies exhibit more sensitivity to surface and subsurface properties with little interference from the atmosphere. The objective of this study is to develop a global land emissivity product using passive microwave observations from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer – Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) and to investigate its sensitivity to land surface pr...
